Technical Support Issues (Part 8)
Technical Support Issues (Part 8)Also, every time I talk to someone knowledgeable at Apple about these dead hard drives, they say words to the effect of "we don't recommend or support the use of any third party utilities, but that may very well work..."
Why Apple doesn't buy this product (and/or the company that makes it) and include it standard with every new Mac is absolutely beyond my comprehension. It's THAT good.
My personal regimen with hard drives is this:
repair permissions both immediately before and immediately after each installation of ANY new software -- including system updates (this prevents a vast majority of the problems people see after upgrading)
after any crash or system lockup requiring a hard reboot, I boot into single user mode (command+S on startup) and run "fsck -fy"; not just once (as OS X will do automatically upon hard reboot) but repeatedly, until all errors are eliminated and everything checks out okay (this will fix things that DiskUtility will miss, and then some)
if the system is misbehaving or it's been a few weeks since I've run DiskWarrior, I get it out and run it on all my disks (this addresses both known problems and is good preventive maintenance)
